How to survive a long haul flight.

Can we all say that we love travelling? Seeing new places, faces, sights, food and so on.
However one of the things that we will all have to endure is the long haul flight. For those that get air sick? Good luck!

For this short post I will be blogging about how to survive the long haul flight to you chosen destination.

  1. Stay Healthy

A human being is not made to sit still for long periods in one go. So walk up and down the aisle. Stretch. Do arm, joint, neck etc exercises in your seat.

Drink lots of water. Staying hydrated before, during and after is important too! Less caffeine the better. Bring a water bottle – you know when you have to go through security you have to throw away anything liquid on you? Well bring tea bags, some instant coffee etc. You can refill along the way. Nifty right?

The plane is cold. Bring some fluffy socks and a jumper. Chances are long haul flights will go through a night cycle so you will feel somewhat chilly. Wearing comfortable clothes is vital here.

Try to bring something that will  help you sleep. Wether it’s a neck pillow, a sleeping pill, or a thick book you will need some help sleeping upright.

  2. Distraction for the long hours

There will always be loud noises on the plane, whether it be from noisy children, loud people in general or the general noise of large mass of people within a confined space screen-shot-2016-11-17-at-17-41-54for a long time. Get yourself some noise cancelling earphones. These are life savers. Life Savers.

On that note bring your USB too. Most long haul flights will have a plug connector. You should be able to charge your phone, tablet etc. while on your journey.

  3.  Take note!

Have a pen at hand! It might seem a bit ridiculous to mention it but when you are crossing borders (hello? Long flight?) there will always be entry/exit information that you need to fill in. A pen is always useful.

  4. Carry on luggage.

Now I know that putting in that extra kilo of shopping into your carry on is looking very attractive, but leave it in the luggage case. In you carry on you shouldn’t have anything too heavy. Something extra on your carry on can mean less legroom for you – and after fifteen hours you will wish you didn’t bring it on.

Some books, phone, tablet, earphones, toiletries etc. Some stuff that will help you pass the time.

  5. Be Safe.

Now, I know when you are tired and grumpy from being squeezed into a tiny place with lots of people can be annoying but that is just it. You are in a public place. Keep your money, purse, identification, bag etc. safe. If your have a backpack, a gym bag etc as you carry on. Put it in the overhead – that’s fine.

Make sure you have a small bag as well though – for your identifications, tickets, money, cards etc.

Cheers and have a fun flight! Maybe if you have some tips of your own write it down?

Girl’s Top Ten Travel Tips

Travelling is something that I know we all want to do. After all we are on this earth for a short while so why not go out and see what is out there? Now here are 10 tips that will help you on that dream trip – after all a little goes a long way – and for trips that is definitely true.

  1. Stash Extra Cash!

Cash is king. Cover your ass in an emergency – stash some in a few different places, at least a couple hundred dollars/euros. Your wallet gets stolen or your card gets eaten by the ATM, you’ll be glad you did.

Some stash spots ideas: socks, a toiletry bag, hidden pockets, anywhere else you can think of!

  2. Meet Local People

Make it a point to avoid other travellers  and fellow tourists from time to time and start conversations with local people. English is widely acknowledged but make sure to carry a handy simple phrases book in the local language. You’ll get a friendlier response and a more honest one once they see you put some effort into their culture and language.

Learn from those who live in the country you’re visiting. People enrich your travels more than sights do.

  3. Back Everything Up

Keep both digital and physical copies of your passport, visas, driver’s license, birth certificate, health insurance card, serial numbers, and important phone numbers ready to go in case of an emergency. As with cash if it gets stolen, lost etc. you have a back up ready.

Use dropbox, keep it in your e-mail, have your passport in your pouch – have an extra as a back up ready!

  4. Try Couch-surfing

The couch surfing is not a new phenomena. We millennials’ take up a large portion of the population – and travelling is on top of the thing we want to do and do do – you will be sure to find someone you know wherever you’re going. If not there are websites available that will help you couch surf. Couchsurfing.org is a large online community – can be found on Facebook, Twitter etc. of travellers who share their spare rooms or couches with strangers for free.

If you truly want to experience a country and it’s people, staying with a local is the way to go. Meeting the locals and a free place to stay, what more can you ask for? (Don’t answer that.)

  5. Get Lost On Purpose

If you want to see the parts of a town – where the people live, work and shop you need to get there first. The best way to do this is on your two foot — write the name of your hotel so you can catch a taxi back if needed, then just pick a direction and start walking.

Don’t worry too much about stumbling into dangerous neighbourhoods either, as locals will generally warn you before you get that far.

  6. Eat Local Food

Think you already know what Chinese food tastes like? Chances are they are completely different to your local Chinese place. Taste a bit of everything when you travel, the street food, the restaurants with large queues, and even the recommendation from your friend. Especially if you don’t know what it is.

Don’t be scared of the food. If the locals can eat it safely so could you.

  7. Keep Good Notes

Start a journal when you start travelling. My memory for details sucks. Information like the names of people I met, conversations I had, feelings about a new experience, or what a particular town smelled like. Write it down.

If you ever want to write about your travels, these details are handy. Sketch a building, stamp from the local tourist shop, the receipt from the local gallery – keep it and start a scrapbook. After all you do want to look back at it don’t you?

  8. Pack Less Stuff

You don’t need more than 1/2 the stuff you think you do to travel. We’ve all over packed. It’s a right of passage. My first time was with a luggage, bag-pack, and my own large handbag. Now I only have a small carry on (bag-pack again – easy to transport and no need to wait for the luggage to come out) with a pouch for my important stuff to keep at hand.

As a full-time young vagabond, everything I need has to fit in my bag-pack. If you’re not sure about packing something, you don’t need it.

  9. Stay In Touch

Remember to call your family & friends. Maybe surprise them and go old-school by sending a postcard (it’s in the mail, Mom!). Travelling isn’t lonely, you constantly meet other people, but many of those are fleeting. So maintaining a strong connection with the people who know you best is important.

Another point in favour is that it is for safety reasons – tell them where you will be going, with who and around when you will call them back. Keep you social media updated so that you will be safe all the time!

  10. Treat Your Body Well

Travel can throw your body out of whack. Time difference anyone? When you’re moving from place to place it’s difficult to maintain a workout routine, we don’t sleep enough, or we eat that delicious, sumptuous cakes too much. I’m guilty of snacking on too much sugar and not exercising. What’s a girl to do when there’s so much to do and so little time?

Remember to be nice to your body. Get enough sleep, stay hydrated, eat healthy, use sunscreen, and exercise often. That way you will actually be able to go out and see everything.
